While looking through the Australian War Memorial (AWM) website we came across an amazing film of George George VI visiting RAF Scampton following the successful Operation Chastise. He met the crews who were later to be called the Dambusters hosted by their leader Guy Gibson. The four minute film features many of the Dambusters including a short clip of Flt.Lt. Les Knight DSO. This is the first time we have seen a movie of Les Knight. It is very brief but of immense value to us. Here is a link the the AWM:

Five Australian military servicemen drove from southern Germany to pay their respects to the Hammer War dead on Remembrance Day 2023. After a four hour drive they arrived at the old cemetery on the Molenstraat just before the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month. This was when the guns fell silent in 1918 ending the Great War. This day is remembered throughout the Commonwealth countries as Remembrance Day when the war dead from WW1 and subsequent wars are remembered.

At 11 am the five servicemen held a small ceremony to remember airmen Les Knight, Thomas Mair and Kenneth Blow. The Last Post sounded, a two minute silence was held and wreaths laid. The Australians placed a beer at each grave in a personal tribute.

After a light lunch the men visited the Les Knight monument on the Janmansweg. The group were deeply moved on how well both monument and graves are kept.

This year has been an unprecedented year for relatives visiting Den Ham

There were four remarkable and unexpected visits to this area and each visit was one of great emotion, joy, sadness and a whole range of other feelings which added a new dimension to the family history of each visitor.

It began in May, when for the second consecutive year Europe’s only airworthy Lancaster bomber paid tribute to all the Fallen Allied airmen and Liberators of the village. A few days later the son of gunner Fred Sutherland, one of Les Knight’s crew members visited the historic brink-dorp on an anniversary tour of Europe.

Iconic Lancaster bomber returns to Den Ham with flypast over The Esch & Les Knight monument

It began with a surprise invitation being sent to the Hammer Stichting Remembering Dambuster Les Knight DSO to apply for a second flypast by the iconic Lancaster bomber. The invitation was accepted, approved by the British Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and preparations made for another spectacular event in the airspace above Den Ham.

The event was looking to become a major regional event as every social media post by the Les Knight Stichting was being read by upwards of 40,000 people and being shared over 300 times. The interest was phenomenal and Les Knight Stichting secretary Melvin Chambers expected the number of those attending to exceed the 6,000 people who witnessed the event last year. Chambers was expecting upwards of 8,000 people to witness, yet again the magical sight of the flying monument at the viewing points on the Janmansweg, Leertendijk and the Esch. Then on the eve of Remembrance Day Chambers was told the flypast had been cancelled due to technical problems. He spent five hours cancelling all the extensive preparations.

Then late on the morning of 4 May an unexpected telephone call from the Lancaster pilot Neil Whitehead.

“Engineers have worked through the night to repair the aircraft. We are coming to Den Ham, only we will be an hour later than planned, “he said.

With less than four hours warning Chambers had the enormous task to re-arrange the event. Thanks to RTVOost and social media the message went viral. Just before the Lancaster was due to arrive Chambers gave a short lecture to those gathered at the Les Knight monument on the Janmansweg. He said the flypast was dedicated to the 10 Allied Airmen and the two Canadian Liberators who died for our Freedom. All the names of the Fallen were read out aloud.

An estimated 1,000 people went to the three viewing points and right on time the unmistakeable noise of the Lancaster was heard approaching. It was a fantastic sight to see the Lancaster fly above Den Ham again, and especially fly over the Esch, which didn’t happen last year due to technical reasons.

Local history society member Job Jansen and Melvin Chambers hired a nine-seat VW Transporter to meet the nephew of an American airman who died when a B24 Liberator bomber crashed at the Hammerflier on 22 December 1943.

They had arranged to meet Dan and Susie Sondag at the huge American Cemetery at Margraten, Limburg on 13 September. Dan and Susie were given a warm welcome at Margraten where they were guided to their uncle’s grave by an official. They spent some time alone at the grave of S/Sgt Willis Sondag who was initially buried in Den Ham, before inviting Chamber and Jansen to join them and lay flowers together. It was the first time a family member had visited S/Sgt. Sondag in 80 years. After two hours it was time to go to Den Ham, where a Hammer family made the Sondag family welcome with a tasty Chinese meal and wine. Later that evening, Dan was taken to the shed on the Esweg to meet the Remmink family. The grandparents of Henk Remmink played an important role picking up the dead crew members by horse and cart. The crew were kept in the shed until their burial which was delayed due to the Christmas festive period.

On 26 September the granddaughter of Les Knight’s brother John visited Den Ham with her husband Andrew. They were met at Ommen Station by Job Jansen and Melvin Chambers. A whole day was spent in the area visiting important sites which relate to Les Knight. Besides the monument and Knight’s grave, the couple were guided to the zone where the crews landed by parachute, Noord Deuningen where it is thought Les Knight’s 6,000 kg bomb is thought to have been jettisoned following damage to his Lancaster after hitting tree tops at Ladbergen, Germany.

When Holden’s aircraft was shot down, Knight flew through the resulting explosion which affected Knight’s aircraft by becoming sluggish. The body content of your post goes here.

We have just spoken to pilot Flt.Lt. Neil Whitehead. he has told us the devastating new that tomorrow's planned fly past to the Netherlands has been cancelled due to many technical issues that can not be repaired in time. We are deeply saddend by this report. As the pilot said : the safety of crew and the integrity of the Lancaster are most important. PLEASE SHARE THIS DEVASTATING NEWS.... PLEASE NOTE: It was the Dutch Ministry of Defence and Dagblad Tubnantia who said a Dakota would replace the lancaster shoukd there be technical issue. Please note that is their responsibility.

Today marks the 100th birthday of the world's last surviving Dambuster Sqdn.Ldr. Johnny Johnson MBE DFM. Congratulations Sir. We in the frontier village of Den Ham send you the most hearty congratulations and wish you a wonderful day with your family.

All the reason to raise a glass to your good health and happiness. Your life in the RAF and later as a teacher is marked by your generosity, sharp wit and great dignity. You once told me you believed Les Knight to be the finest pilot in the RAF.

We know the self-help group called Group 617 "Making a Difference" are close to your heart. Indeed as their president you have been moist generous and made a great difference to these veterans in the United Kingdom. They held an early birthday party for you at an old airfield just west of London earlier this year and you was honoured with not one, not two but three fly-pasts. It was a wonderful day for a select group of friends.

The second edition of an amazing book has just come onto the market. The late Arnold Eaton DFC wrote the history of the Lancaster he flew in during the war. Old Fred - The Fox as the Lancaster was lovingly nicknamed flew 49 bombing missions. Each mission is recalled in this well researched and presented book. This second edition has been updated and edited by his son Geoff. It is a great read and contains many photographs of missions, maps, mission records and personal memories.

This image was taken by one of our board members from the Les Knight monument on 10 April 2021. It captures the Missing Man tribute by pilots of the Egmond Vintage Wings memorial flight. Minutes earlier these gracious aircraft flew over the neighbouring villages of Hellendoorn and Nijverdal who were celebrating their 76th anniversary of their Liberation by the canadian Army. The aircraft were returning to base at Hoogeveen airport when they detoured to honour the memory of the Australian dambuster hero, who is buried in the old cemetery in Den Ham. Thank you everyone at

Two unexpected discoveries on Les Knight's 100th birthday this month. His Christening gown was discovered in Edmonton, Canada. The gown is made of silk and is in perfect condition. It was made by Les Knight's mother Nellie for his baptism. It is an excellent piece of craftmanship. The needle work is of a very high standard. Les Knight and his crew formed a bond which kept the crew united for decades following his tragic death. The families kept in touch often visiting each other across the globe. When Mrs.Knight heard the wife of Harry O'Brien was pregnant with their first born, she sent the gown to Canada. It arrived just in time to worn at the baptism of Mr. and Mrs. O'Brien's daughter Leslie, who was named after O'Brien's skipper. The gown was discovered on what would have been Les's 100th birthday.

A few days later, this long lost crew photograph was discovered. It is his famous crew taken at Wainfleet, Lincolnshire during the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Dams Raids. RAF Wainfleet was a training range where the 617 Squadron spent many hours perfecting their low level bombing and gunnery skills. It was a coastal range some 60 km south-east of Lincoln. It has now been given back to nature and is famous for its control tower. From left to right : Harry O'Brien, Fred Sutherland, Bob Kellow, Sydney Hobday, Ray Grayston and Edward "Johnny" Johnson.
